Trail Overview

From Interstate 90, take exit 54 near Hyak on the south side of the interstate. Drive through the ski and residential area towards the water treatment plant and ponds. This gate may be seasonally closed. Drive through the gate at the east end and onto the gravel 9070 FS road.

Difficulty

Overall, most vehicles can make it to the trailhead, though two-wheeler and low clearance vehicles will need to slowly choose lines thoughtfully. There are some v-notches in the road, but no more than 12 inches, some puddles, and larger rocks to negotiate. Past the trailhead, it gets rocky, and all-wheel drive and high clearance 4x4 vehicles handle the road better. There are some spurs that could require backing out due to no turnaround.

Twin Lakes/Cold Creek Rd. is seasonally closed. It was open when we entered on 12/24 to go snow wheeling and camping over Christmas, but when departing on 12/26 the road at the Hyak Overlook intersection was dammed in with a big wall of plowed snow, blocking motorized access. Twin Lakes/Cold Creek road which is now used for snow shoeing/nordic skiing. Access at Hyak Overlook is blocked as well.

Trail was open and easy to drive. If you’re an experienced snow driver you definitely could go up more than I did. I stopped and turned around right next to Mt. Catherine trail head.

Not bad of a trail. Went midday and it was mostly sunny. Definitely recommend snow tires. 2-2.5 hours round trip up and down the trail. I was on stock suspension on the SR5 but I did have K02’s which helped so much with grip. Aired down to about 25 PSI

Snow melted at the time I went, lots of Christmas tree harvesting in the area, decent amount of car traffic. No washouts or obstruction, trail is clear of snow/ice as of writing.

Pictures are a mix of nov. 4 and 5 went up about the same time both mornings snow has mostly melted. Was a good 3-4” in some spots. Trail was fairly easy for snow on rocks. I just took it slow and it was all fine.
