Trail Overview
Hyak/Rockdale Lake Road, also known as FS 9070, offers a unique offroad experience through the Snoqualmie National Forest, crossing right through the Summit at Snoqualmie ski area. The road surface is primarily packed dirt and gravel, with some rocky sections and mild elevation changes that keep things interesting without being overly technical. In summer, the trail shares space with an active downhill mountain biking park, so expect riders on the road and use caution around blind corners. As you climb, you’ll be treated to sweeping views of the surrounding Cascades, forested ridgelines, and open ski runs that give the area a different character than typical forest roads.
This trail makes a great side trip for those exploring the Snoqualmie Pass area. There are plenty of opportunities to pull off and explore, with access to hiking routes, dispersed camping spots, and seasonal wildlife viewing. Keep an eye out for deer and elk, especially in the early morning or evening. The Rockdale Lake area provides a quieter destination for those looking to stretch their legs or spend a night off-grid. It is also a good area for hunting during open seasons. Plan ahead as the road is closed in winter, but in summer it offers a fun and scenic detour that blends recreation and rugged mountain access.
Sharp-eyed observers will notice unique glacier striations carved into the rock making up the trail surface, roughly 15,000 years ago. The striation grooves indicate the primary direction of the glaciers as they advanced.
