Trail Overview
Segelsen Ridge is a 4.1 mile out-and-back single lane gravel trail that follows a high ridgeline. The trail features mild rutting and occasional views through the trees, with excellent views of Round Mountain to the west becoming more prominent as the route gains elevation. Past the first intersection, the road becomes noticeably rougher, with loose and steeper sections, muddy potholes, and increasing seasonal challenges. Snow can linger on the route into late June. The last section of the trail is a narrow shelf road that is not for the faint of heart. The trail ends at a small turnaround large enough to accommodate a couple of vehicles. Segelsen Ridge is open from 05/01 - 11/30, to highway legal vehicles only.
Difficulty
Segelsen Ridge starts out relatively easy but becomes more challenging farther up the trail. Loose, steep sections, muddy potholes, and rougher road conditions beyond the first intersection make high-clearance 4WD and good tires recommended. While there are no major technical obstacles, the combination of mud, loose surfaces, and lingering snow can significantly increase difficulty early in the season. Conditions become more difficult when wet, particularly where potholes fill with water and traction decreases. As with most trails in the area, bringing a chainsaw or equipment to clear fallen trees is recommended.
