Trail Overview

Segelsen/NF18 is a 20.8-mile point-to-point gravel trail in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Segelsen is a wide, well-groomed trail with lots of spur trails, views, and dispersed campsites along the way. (All distances are from the south starting point) At the 1-mile mark, there is an active quarry where large mining equipment crosses the trail. There is also active logging in the area, so be sure to keep to the right and watch for trucks. If entering from the south side, there is usually a sign indicating the current CB channel used by truckers in the area. At approximately mile 10, there is some rutted water damage to the road, but it is passable to most vehicles. The difficulty of this trail lies in its length and remoteness. There are no quick bailout trails to return to pavement, so it is imperative to come prepared, be self-reliant, and have a reliable rig. This trail ends at an intersection with Finney-Cumberland Road/NF17;it does not end at pavement. The last picture shows what the start of the trail looks like if approached from the north.

Open, only a few people. Some overgrowth that made sections narrow but pretty relaxing, plenty of places to pass

We rode up from South Skagit and up Lower Finney today. Roads in decent shape. Some big potholes and lots of run off ruts. We went up to the snow line and decided not to continue after another person in a 4 Runner said it was not in good shape for a bike yet. Watch out for some erosion cuts and some slick spots.

It got very snowy and slick about half way up, it was passable but very hairy in a few spots due to snow and ice.

Lots of snow as you go further into the trail. As the tracker indicates: that’s as far as my Hyundai Santa Cruz, and my buddy’s Nissan Frontier was able to go (stock, 8” to 10” of clearance, A/S tires) with 4-wheel drive turned on and with snow-chains.
