Trail Overview
Hawkins Lake is a 1.9-mile out-and-back route that follows a narrow, overgrown road through dense forest. The trail features several heavily rutted sections with moderately sized loose rock, along with deep divots that make high-clearance vehicles recommended. While the forest limits long-distance views, drivers should keep an eye out for glimpses of waterfalls and Round Mountain through breaks in the trees. The route ends at a small turnaround where heavy overgrowth, trail damage, and fallen trees prevent further travel. Hawkins Lake is open from May 1 through November 30 and is legally accessible by highway-legal vehicles only.
Difficulty
Hawkins Lake is moderately challenging due to its narrow trail corridor, deep divots, and heavily rutted sections. Moderately sized loose rock can make traction inconsistent in places, while the overgrown vegetation may result in pinstriping for wider vehicles. High-clearance vehicles are recommended, particularly in the rougher sections where rutting and erosion are most pronounced. Conditions become more difficult when wet, as ruts and depressions can hold water and become slick. As with most trails in the area, bringing a chainsaw or equipment to clear fallen trees is recommended.
