Short Ridge Trail

Short Ridge Trail is an easy Off- Highway Vehicle connector designed for riders looking for a straightforward link within the Walnut Mountain trail network in the Sundquist Unit of North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area. This short route provides a convenient transition between the main travel corridor and nearby interior trails. The trail surface is primarily dirt and native forest soil with occasional small rock sections and minor elevation changes typical of Appalachian connector trails. Its relatively smooth terrain and manageable grades make it suitable for most ATV riders and side-by-side drivers seeking a simple passage between larger routes rather than a technical riding challenge. Although short in length, Short Ridge Trail plays a practical role in the interconnected Off- Highway Vehicle system by allowing riders to move efficiently between Walnut Mountain and the Muse Hollow area while building longer loops through surrounding trails such as Louse Creek and Long Haul Hollow. ATVs and other permitted off-highway vehicles, including side-by-sides and UTVs are allowed. Riders may encounter muddy patches, loose rock, or shallow ruts depending on weather conditions and seasonal trail use. The wildlife management area remains open during hunting seasons, though state regulations require at least 500 square inches of daylight fluorescent orange on the head and upper body when outside a vehicle or camp during deer and elk gun or muzzleloader seasons, and users should remain aware that forestry or mining activity within the WMA may occasionally result in truck traffic or changing road and trail conditions.
