Trail Overview

Muse Hollow Trail is a moderately difficult OHV route suited for riders with some experience navigating uneven Appalachian terrain within the Sundquist Unit of North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area. This route travels through forested ridges and hollows near the Walnut Mountain trail network and offers a more technical ride than many surrounding connectors. The trail surface is primarily dirt and native forest soil, but riders will encounter stretches of loose rock, shallow ruts, and uneven ground that can become slick during wet weather. Gradual elevation changes and tighter wooded corridors require steady throttle control and attention to line choice, making the trail best suited for ATVs and capable side-by-sides operated by riders comfortable with moderate terrain. Muse Hollow Trail links into the broader OHV network by connecting with routes such as Long Haul Hollow Trail and Louse Creek Trail, allowing riders to build longer loops through the interconnected system around Walnut Mountain. These junctions make the trail an important segment for exploring multiple areas of the Sundquist Unit without returning to the same route. ATVs and other permitted OHVs including UTVs are allowed where indicated by Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency trail signage. Trail conditions may include mud, loose rock, and erosion-related ruts typical of Appalachian forest trails, particularly following rainfall. The wildlife management area remains open during hunting seasons, though riders must follow state safety regulations requiring at least 500 square inches of fluorescent orange on the head and upper body when outside a vehicle or camp during deer and elk gun or muzzleloader seasons, and users should remain aware that nearby forestry or mining operations in the WMA may occasionally introduce heavy equipment traffic or changing trail conditions.
