Trail Overview
Branching eastward directly off FS 5830130, FS 5830140 is an out-and-back woodland spur that leads directly into the expansive Sink Quarry pit. Managed by the Mt. Hood National Forest, the corridor cuts through a lush, dense stand of mature Douglas firs and hemlocks before emerging into a broad, sunlit gravel bowl. The trail surface consists of an established, single-lane crushed rock and packed dirt track holding a difficulty rating of 1. Outdoor enthusiasts use this short spur to reach the open quarry grounds, which provide ample flat ground for dispersed camping setups, recreational target shooting, and scenic forest respites. Remnants in the gravel clearing also point to historical and recent tactical use as a forest fire helicopter landing zone during regional wildland fire operations.
Difficulty
Rated 1, this short spur is straightforward and non-technical, featuring a level roadbed with no notable grade variations or surface obstacles. Staying centered in the worn tire tracks provides consistent traction and generous undercarriage clearance over the firm dirt and gravel. While roadside vegetation lightly fringes the borders of the corridor, the driving lane remains wide enough to pass without significant scratch hazards. Reaching the terminal quarry bowl opens up into a broad, flat expanse that offers effortless maneuvering and plenty of space to turn around safely.
