Trail Overview
Branching off the FS 1640 route, the FS 1640-660 spur operates as a rugged, out-and-back trail pushing uphill into a dense, evergreen forest. The track weaves a narrow path through an incredibly thick, heavily shaded canopy where the low-hanging pines frequently crowd the lane. Earning a difficulty rating of 3, the unmaintained dirt and crushed rock surface degrades significantly the further it climbs, eventually devolving entirely into an impassable state before it can reach the upper ridge. Despite the rough conditions, the route remains a viable option for backcountry explorers due to the numerous dispersed campsites scattered along the more accessible lower stretches.
Difficulty
Holding a level 3 rating, this narrow, unmaintained spur requires a cautious, attentive drive. While the surface begins as a typical crushed rock path, it quickly degrades, featuring continuous, jarring washboarding. The primary hazards are the numerous deep erosion ruts that have carved into the roadbed, along with several random, unmaintained water bars that cross the trail. These obstacles demand careful tire placement and a slow crawl to prevent bottoming out the vehicle's suspension. Additionally, the corridor is noticeably tight; drivers should expect the dense pines lining the trail to graze the vehicle, making light pinstriping a strong possibility.
