Trail Overview

This well-maintained forest road winds through beautiful woodland, gradually climbing to a plateau before descending back into the forest. The grades are generally moderate, although the southern end it becomes noticeably steeper after the intersection and continues uphill for several miles. Drivers towing trailers should be prepared for a sustained climb in this section. The road is mostly one lane, with a few pullouts where faster traffic can pass, as well as blind corners and switchbacks that require extra attention. Some sections also have corrugation, so keeping speeds down is important. The biggest concern along the route is the large number of potholes; several are quite deep and can be difficult to spot, particularly when approaching at speed, so trailers and larger vehicles should take extra care. There are also a few side spurs and connecting trails, but most have been closed or are no longer in use. The road sees regular traffic as an important connection through the area, so watch for other vehicles and Forest Service traffic, especially around corners and narrower sections.

Difficulty

Overall, this is a straightforward forest road, but the potholes, narrow sections, and steep climb near Devils Flat make slower driving worthwhile.
