Trail Overview
This beautiful, well-maintained trail is a short, one-way-in, one-way-out route, so you must travel the same road in both directions. The trail descends all the way to the bottom, so be prepared for the climb back up on the return trip. At the bottom is the Jerry Phillips Reserve, a 58-acre grove of approximately 250-year-old Douglas fir and understory hemlock. This area was once part of a much larger forest that covered much of the Coos River drainage before major harvesting began in 1950. The area is also connected to the 1868 forest fire that burned from Scottsburg to Coos Bay and consumed an estimated 300-year-old forest. Although this is a short route, it is a meaningful and beautiful drive through a well-maintained forest. Please take care and respect this special area. At the top of the trail, a split provides access to another route. Take the right branch to reach a small trail that climbs farther into the mountain. Just before heading uphill, you’ll also find a beautiful dispersed campsite worth checking out. This area is open year-round on gravel roads. However, travel on dirt roads is restricted during wet conditions, which typically occur from October 1 through June 1. OHV use is prohibited where vegetation is present on the road during fire season, typically June through October. ATVs, UTVs, Side-by-Sides, and Dirt Bikes must always have a valid Oregon ATV Operating Permit sticker.
