Trail Overview

This is a pleasant and efficient two-track trail that provides a direct link between the Monitor Valley trail and South North Woods (FS 43262). The driving is generally low-stress and smooth, allowing you to focus on the spectacular panoramic vistas. To the east, the jagged peaks of the Monitor Range tower over the landscape, while to the west, the immense Monitor Valley floor stretches toward the horizon. While the route is technically easy, it requires a vigilant eye for a common Nevada hazard: the "sneaky" volcanic rock. Throughout the trail, large, sharp rocks are often hidden within the sagebrush immediately adjacent to the track. These hidden boulders can easily cause sidewall damage if you drift too far off the established two-track. Keep your binoculars ready; this open terrain is a favorite thoroughfare for Pronghorn Antelope and bands of wild mustangs that are frequently seen silhouetted against the morning sun. Expect zero cell service for the duration of this trail. The vastness of the valley floor puts you well outside the reach of any local towers. Difficulty

Suitable for most high-clearance SUVs and 4x4 vehicles. While technically approachable for standard crossover vehicles in dry conditions, the risk of sidewall damage from hidden rocks makes a vehicle with sturdy all-terrain tires a much better choice. Be extremely cautious of sharp rocks hidden in the brush along the trail's edge.
