Trail Overview
Charnac Brock Canyon is a premier high-altitude loop cresting at a staggering 9,000 feet. This trail serves as a magnificent tour of the Toiyabe Range's upper reaches. The drive is a constant "rise and fall" experience, winding through diverse ecological zones. In the springtime, the higher meadows erupt in a vibrant display of wildflowers, including Indian Paintbrush and Lupine, while large bands of wild mustangs are frequently seen silhouetted against the expansive skyline. The driving is unrelenting and high-intensity. You will navigate a variety of technical challenges, from narrow corridors of dense timber to wide-open ridges where the wind is your constant companion. The views from the 9,000-foot peaks are nothing short of breathtaking, offering a literal bird’s-eye view of the Great Basin’s rippling mountain ranges. For those seeking the ultimate high-desert camp, the loop features several primitive spots. While these sites are highly exposed to the wind, the sunrise over the Monitor Range from this elevation is a sight few ever get to witness. At 9,000 feet, oxygen is thin, and the weather is unpredictable. Snow can block this loop well into July, and afternoon lightning storms are a serious hazard on the exposed ridges. Difficulty
Rated a 5 due to the combination of long, loose, and steep rocky hill climbs that require low-range gearing and high-traction tires. You will also encounter several technical boulder fields and sustained off-camber sections that demand a focused spotter and precise tire placement. The trail passes through several very narrow sections where ancient pinyon pines and junipers have grown thick across the track. This is not a route for full-size luxury rigs.
