Trail Overview

Goat Spring is a "short and sweet" out-and-back trail that carries explorers from the open, low-growing scrub brush of the foothills into an intimate forest of Pinyon Pine and Utah Juniper. This route is a fantastic choice for those seeking a quick escape into the timber without committing to a full-day expedition. As the trail gains elevation, the landscape becomes increasingly textured, with interesting rock formations dotting the hillsides, providing a ruggedly beautiful backdrop for the drive. Travelers are highly likely to spot stunning bands of wild mustangs silhouetted against the horizon or grazing in the pinyon clearings. Be aware that the motorized portion of the trail currently terminates approximately 100 yards before the actual spring source due to a 7-inch diameter downed tree blocking the track. This serves as a natural turnaround point, though the walk to the spring itself is short and well worth the effort to experience the quiet solitude of this high-desert water source. Expect zero cell service for the duration of this trail. The surrounding hills create a total signal shadow. Download offline maps before leaving the Austin or Highway 50 area.

Difficulty

While the trail is short, the rocky washouts and narrow timber turns require the maneuverability and clearance of a dedicated off-road vehicle. Rated a 3 due to several technical wash crossings. While not extreme, these erosion-carved transitions require a slow approach and decent ground clearance to avoid dragging a bumper or hitch.
