Trail Overview

This out-and-back trail offers a spirited journey that begins with a deceptive sense of ease. The route starts near the canyon floor. There is a high-quality, level dispersed campsite featuring an established fire ring, making it a perfect spot for an easy-access overnight stay. As the trail gains elevation and enters the timber, explorers are greeted by a dense, fragrant forest of Utah Juniper and Pinyon Pine. While the initial segment shows signs of past trail maintenance with trimmed branches, the character of the drive shifts dramatically as you move deeper into the range. The latter half of the trail essentially becomes a natural creek bed, requiring a high degree of technical focus. The track transitions into a series of deep, lopsided washouts and narrow corridors where you must negotiate tight corners around ancient trees. The driving is physically active, requiring constant articulation as you navigate the eroded "V-notch" transitions of the dry wash. Along the way, keep an eye on the canyon walls to admire the intricate rock formations that tower over the timber. The motorized recording culminates at the point where the overgrowth becomes impassable for full-size rigs, providing a quiet turnaround point in a pristine mountain setting. Expect zero cell service once you enter the folds of the canyon. The high ridges and dense timber create a total signal dead zone. Download offline maps before leaving the Austin area.

Difficulty

Rated a 4 due to the technical nature of the creek-bed navigation and the frequency of deep, technical washouts. Expect unavoidable contact with branches. Vehicle Size Warning: Full-size rigs are strongly discouraged past the initial forested section. The tight turns around standing timber and the narrowing creek bed are best suited for Jeeps, mid-size trucks, or narrow-body OHVs.
