Trail Overview
The Willow Spring Cutoff is an exhilarating "roller coaster" of a trail that offers a unique driving experience by cutting across the natural drainages of the Toquima Range. This route's orientation creates a series of constant rises and falls, offering a spirited, dynamic off-road journey. As you crest each hill, you are rewarded with tremendous, wide-angle views of the surrounding mountain peaks with the vast high-desert valleys splayed out in the foreground. The trail passes through a landscape characterized by interesting rock formations and vast clearings of sagebrush. A central landmark is Willow Spring, a rare and vital water source tucked into the hills that currently serves as a primary watering hole for local livestock. Along the way, you’ll find a few offshoot trails inviting further discovery and several secluded dispersed campsites featuring weathered rock fire rings. This is a fantastic trail for those who enjoy a rhythmic, technical drive and the chance to see Nevada’s resilient high-desert wildlife in their natural element.
This is active grazing land. Be prepared to encounter cattle on or near the trail, especially near the Willow Spring area. Please move slowly and yield to all livestock. Expect zero cell service on this cutoff. The undulating terrain and nearby mountain ridges block all incoming signals. Download offline maps before leaving the Tonopah area.
Difficulty
Rated a 3 primarily due to the technical steep transitions in the washouts. While the majority of the trail is a smooth 2-rating, the technical "dips" make it less suitable for standard low-clearance vehicles.
