Trail Overview
Pipe Spring serves as a critical and highly strategic connector within the rugged interior of the Toquima Range. This "short but sweet" trail is the essential link between the Spanish Springs Trail and the main Salisbury Mountain Road, providing drivers with a reliable through-route. Navigating this corridor is a smart tactical choice; it allows travelers to maintain a continuous loop while avoiding the heavily reclaimed and often impassable sections of the Salisbury Mountain Trail that dead-end further into the range. The driving experience is pleasant and efficient, winding through a beautiful high-desert landscape of sagebrush and mountain mahogany. The track is well-cleared and sees consistent traffic from local explorers and ranching operations, making the route easy to follow even as it twists through the mountain folds. While the majority of the trail allows for steady cruising, the character of the drive is defined by several brief, technical washouts. These obstacles are not excessively deep, but they do require attentive tire placement.
This is active grazing land. Please be prepared to encounter cattle near the spring area; yield the right-of-way and move slowly to minimize dust. Expect zero cell service on this connector. The high peaks of the Toquima Range create a total signal dead zone. Download offline maps before leaving the Manhattan or Belmont corridor.
Difficulty
Rated a 3 due to the presence of technical washouts. While manageable for most high-clearance vehicles, these sections feature enough erosion to require a slow approach to prevent bumper contact or jarring your suspension.
