Trail Overview

Stewart Spring Road is a captivating journey through some of the most unique geology in the Toquima Range. This "twisty and curvy" loop serves as a scenic bridge between the expansive Ralston Valley and the high-altitude Spanish Springs area. The trail begins in a spectacular landscape of rounded, decomposing granite formations that are visually reminiscent of California’s famous Alabama Hills. The driving is engaging as you wind through these ancient, weathered rock gardens, occasionally traversing granite slabs that offer excellent traction. A major landmark at the western end of the trail is Elephant Rock, a remarkable natural formation that perfectly captures the silhouette of a pachyderm. This area is not only a geological marvel but a premier spot for a remote mountain camp. As the trail progresses toward Stewart Spring, the environment becomes more intimate, with Utah Juniper and Pinyon Pine crowding the track. While the spring appeared dry at the time this trail was recorded, or a slow seep absorbed into the earth, the presence of an old, weathered water trough serves as a silent reminder of the area's ranching history. The eastern descent provides a grand finale, dropping you back into the Ralston Valley with magnificent, unobstructed views of the desert floor stretching toward the horizon. Expect zero cell service for the duration of this trail. The high ridges of the Toquima Range create a total signal dead zone. Download offline maps before leaving the Tonopah or Belmont area.

Difficulty

Rated a 4 due to a combination of steeper rock obstacles, tall vertical drops, and a technical wash segment. Several segments of the trail are narrow due to encroaching timber. Minor paint damage (Arizona pinstriping) may occur as you navigate the tighter turns through the juniper groves. v
