Trail Overview
What initially looks like a purely scenic drive around the base of Independence Mountain is actually a vital access trail that connects back into the Winters network of trails. The route bounces and twists through narrow, tall shrubs and grasses. The trail runs through an active grazing area guarded by a substantial cattle gate. It features a hoop lock on the end to keep it tight; you must ensure it is properly closed and secured after passing through. About a mile and a half up, the trail deviates from its original historical course and becomes heavily overgrown in a grove of trees. Still, there is a decent turnaround point right before the end of the recorded path. If you continue into the Winters network, look for a trail off to your left; it begins an out-and-back section that takes you over a prominent hill to the south.
There is roughly one bar of cell service in this area, but it is effectively useless for data or reliable calls. Download all maps offline beforehand.
Difficulty
Requires navigating two washouts, with the deepest exceeding 12 inches and demanding proper tire placement. The remainder of the route consists of a bumpy two-track through tall grass with a few slight off-camber sections.
