Mormon Peak

Mormon Peak offers a scenic and approachable dirt-road climb through the Lolo National Forest for drivers of all skill levels, rewarding them with breathtaking views and prime mountain-top camping. Starting from Lolo Creek Road near Highway 12, this approximately 9.9-mile out-and-back trail winds up Forest Service Road 612, gaining around 2,700 feet of elevation as it climbs from 3,317 feet to a peak elevation of over 6,000 feet. The terrain begins as a very smooth, well-maintained dirt and gravel road that is easily handled by most stock four-wheel-drive SUVs, high-clearance vehicles, and SxSs. As the route climbs higher, the surface transitions to a bumpier, more rugged track near the summit, but it remains rated at a mild level-2 difficulty. Numerous dispersed camping pull-outs line the lower and middle sections of the route, but the ultimate campsite sits near Mormon Peak itself, boasting panoramic views of the surrounding Montana wilderness. While cellular service can occasionally be found at the higher elevations near the summit, it is highly recommended to download offline maps prior to departure due to spotty coverage in the canyons. The trail is typically accessible from late spring through late autumn, depending on snowmelt and seasonal road closures by the Forest Service. Visitors should prepare for changing mountain weather and ensure they carry recovery gear, even though the trail presents no major technical obstacles.
