Trail Overview
Blue Mountain Lookout Spur (6.07) is a short, steep descent designed for offroaders looking to test their vehicle's descent control and traction on loose mountain terrain. Starting near the scenic Blue Mountain Lookout at an elevation of 6,369 feet, this 0.55-mile dirt trail drops 381 feet to an elevation of 5,988 feet. The primary surface consists of loose, rocky dirt that requires careful brake management, particularly given the steep average gradient and maximum pitches reaching up to 20 degrees. While the spur contains no major obstacles or water crossings, the steepness of the descent demands a capable high-clearance vehicle with low-range gearing.
The descent proceeds southwest and offers excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing amidst the dense pine forest. Wet conditions can quickly turn the loose dirt slick, significantly increasing the difficulty and requiring extra caution. This short route acts as a key connector within the larger Missoula-area trail network, linking the high-altitude lookout area toward the Sleeman Ridge Spur and other regional dirt roads. Due to winter snowpack at this elevation, the trail is seasonally open and best accessed from late spring through autumn.
