Trail Overview

Designed for experienced single-track riders, the Blue Mountain Look Out Trail is a thrilling 4.6-mile climb near Missoula that serves up steep, loose, and rocky challenges with rewarding panoramic views. Starting near Hayes Creek at an elevation of 3,595 feet, this route ascends continuously to the historic Blue Mountain Lookout at 6,434 feet, presenting a series of technical hill climbs and narrow, off-camber sidehill exposures. Riders will need excellent throttle control and balance to navigate the loose dirt and rock surface, which demands constant focus. Because of its proximity to Missoula, the trail experiences high traffic from other recreationists, so keeping your eyes up and staying to the right on blind corners is essential for safety. Beyond the technical riding, the trail offers access to an expansive network of multi-use routes within the Blue Mountain Recreation Area, making it a great destination for full-day adventures. While the main trail terminates at the lookout, those looking to extend their journey can continue on trail networks that stretch far into Idaho. The route is best ridden from late spring through fall when snow has cleared, though summer heat can make the climbs more taxing. Ensure your machine is in peak condition to handle the 7.9-degree average gradient and maximum pitches up to 37 degrees, and be prepared for changing weather conditions at the higher elevations.
