Trail Overview
FS 129 is a scenic sand road that winds through the longleaf pine forests of Fort Stewart, offering miles of easy overland travel with several creek crossings and forest bridges. The route features wide sandy roads, occasional mud holes after rain, military landmarks, and expansive pine stands that make for a relaxing drive with plenty of opportunities to stop for photos.
Visitors may encounter deer, wild turkey, songbirds, turtles, and other native wildlife throughout the area. Nearby recreation opportunities include primitive camping, fishing ponds, hiking, hunting, and wildlife viewing when open to the public.
Access Notice
This route is located within Fort Stewart Military Reservation and is open to the public through the Fort Stewart iSportsman Recreation Program. Visitors must obtain the appropriate permits, check into an open recreation area, and comply with all Fort Stewart regulations before entering. Area availability may change daily due to military training.
Difficulty
FS 129 is generally a well-maintained sand road suitable for most high-clearance AWD and 4WD vehicles in dry conditions. Expect loose sugar sand, shallow ruts, standing water after rain, and occasional fallen branches or storm debris. Four-wheel drive is recommended after heavy rainfall, but experienced drivers in stock SUVs should have little difficulty in normal conditions.
