Trail Overview

Webster Pass Road takes you to the top of Webster Pass near Montezuma, CO, and directly over the Williams tunnel. It ends at the top where Red Cone's one-way exits and becomes Hand Cart Gulch Road. There is a T if going up to Radical Hill (FS 286). Be careful to stay to the left as this is not the preferred way to enter Radical Hill and is significantly more challenging (7-8).

Difficulty

The road is rough but passable by most high-clearance vehicles with care. There is one water crossing that is typically 12" or less but can be significantly deeper during heavy rains or spring runoff. There is no bypass, but ample room to turn around.

Great trail. Enjoyable for experienced drivers and easy enough for beginners. Stay to watch drivers descend Red Cone. Tundra on 35s. Open diff. Stock H3

Obstructed by snow where Redcone connects and the continental divide trail crosses. Also had a group of Mountain goats walk down to us.

Completely open until about 30 ft from the top of the pass where there is a big snowdrift. Very possible with dirt bikes though.

Drove up to the creek crossing above Montezuma. Light snow on the 4x4 road packed down - actually filled in some of the roughness. The creek is iced over, slightly, it’s only about 2-3 inches deep as per usual with a layer of ice. Unfortunately I slowly pulled into the creek to cross it and my 4 Runner broke through the ice and smashed the radiator and ac condenser. This also pushed back against the radiator into the cooling fan and broke the plastic blades on the fan. Backed up, Got out, saw the fluid leaking out of the radiator and immediately backed up, turned around and coasted in neutral almost all the way down the 4x4 road, through Montezuma and down to Keystone before my 4-Runner began to overheat, to have the car towed to the shop for repairs. I could definitely use more lift than my stock clearance. I will be putting in a radiator protection skid plate after repairs are complete. Trail is open but be careful at the creek. Road closes November 23.

I just phoned the White River forest service district and confirmed FS285 is open. I believe the previous report of closure is incorrect.

Not terribly busy. Some traffic but could go maybe 15 min without seeing another vehicle at times.

Rocky at most times and single track. Several short up-and-over hills. Shallow water crossings x3 at <=12" deep. Good enough on KO3s with a couple toddlers and my wife. Out and back to Red Cone from Montezuma. The opposite side of Webster Pass at the base of Red Cone is all shelf (at least starting) and snow-free.
