Trail Overview

Handcart Gulch Road is the continuation of Hall Valley Road (Park County 60) and allows OHVs. It allows access to Red Cone (and is the return of the Red Cones one way to 285) and ends at the top of Webster Pass, before becoming Webster Pass Road and continuing into Montezuma, CO. This road has a yearly large snow drift that blocks the 50 feet below the Webster summit and does not typically open until mid to late July and isn't passable by full-size vehicles till August. The switchbacks leading up to Webster have a solid rock on one side, and a large, crumbling drop-off on the other side, making it not suitable for larger full-size vehicles, without a very skillful driver. It offers excellent views of Red Cone, allowing you to get a look at the 10% decent from the top of Red Cone before tackling it.

Difficulty

The road itself is not difficult, with the exception that it is very narrow with frequent washouts, solid rock on one side, and vertical drop-offs on the other side.

The climb is made without much difficulty. Once you reach the summit, you are blown away by the view and the glowing red colors of the mountain.

at the bottom there is a notice from the forest service advising against taking this trail. there is also a full sign saying no full size vehicles. there was just enough room for my "modern midsize" stock Tacoma. The road is certainly narrow and has some rough washouts that make it spicy in a couple spots but overall it is an easy blue and a solid 4. pick up your trash

This trail never gets less scary. Even in my shorty bed taco this trail has me puckering.

Did this yesterday in a Gladiator, but my lord, don’t do this in a full size. I had rubber against the cliff and rubber off the trail. But, you get to a point where backing up really isn’t the best option. An off-road Mercedes came up as well, and he shouldn’t have either. Two wheels or a narrow SxS you’d be ok. Full size don’t do this. There signs on the East side by Red Cone that say it’s closed due to erosion, but no signage on the Zuma side which is where we came from. Don’t be a hero folks, this one is dangerous and if people continue someone won’t make it.

The snowdrift at the top is still there, so be warned that if you're coming over Red Cone, you're not going to be able to get back to 285 down Webster pass.

Trail is open until the switchbacks. After the 3rd switchback trail is snowy and impassable due to the slick snow/ice. Shelf road after 3rd switchback is dangerous at this time.
