Trail Overview

Embark on the thrilling and highly technical second half of Q 5/10 Road, a beautifully rugged 2.5-mile canyon route that drastically ramps up the intensity from its lower counterpart. Because it is far less maintained due to the heavy trailer and van traffic stopping early on, this formidable section is strictly unsuitable for those larger vehicles. The adventure kicks off immediately with a steep, aggressive incline blanketed in loose rock and carved with incredibly deep, punishing ruts ranging from 18 to 20 inches. Around the 0.2-mile mark, you will pass through a gate that is typically left open. Drivers must exercise extreme caution as an exposed natural gas pipeline runs along the left side of the rugged trail, gradually creeping dangerously closer to the road's edge. Prepare to navigate sharply angled, off-camber sections reaching 10 to 15 degrees, which are heavily littered with scattered, jagged rocks measuring 6 to 12 inches across. As you push farther into the remote backcountry, the trail narrows precariously along breathtaking cliffside terrain. This specific stretch features slick, unstable sediment that becomes intensely hazardous and slippery when wet. At approximately 2.3 miles, the harsh desert environment wonderfully gives way to a beautifully shaded, scenic canyon approach. This peaceful corridor leads directly to a highly secluded dispersed campsite near the trail's end. Here, you are rewarded with unparalleled privacy, zero neighboring sites for miles, and truly exceptional, panoramic views of the deep canyon, surrounding mountain peaks, and the stunning Fruita National Monument.

Difficulty

This highly technical upper section demands extensive off-road experience, mandatory four-wheel drive, and approximately 16 to 18 inches of robust approach clearance. Earning its level 4 technical rating. Drivers must confidently conquer an immediate, steep rocky incline featuring punishing 18- to 20-inch deep ruts and precarious 10- to 15-degree off-camber slopes littered with large boulders. Furthermore, the perilously narrow cliffside terrain features incredibly slick sediment that transforms into a deadly hazard when exposed to any moisture, making wet-weather travel strictly forbidden.
