Trail Overview
This is a short but scenic off-road route that remains relatively easy to navigate for most of its length before becoming more challenging near the final section. The majority of the trail consists of straightforward terrain, but the last portion contains several large embedded rocks that require careful tire placement and adequate ground clearance. These obstacles are the primary reason this route receives an intermediate difficulty rating. Despite its short length, the route offers beautiful scenery and provides access to two trailheads designated for non-motorized recreation, including hiking and horseback riding. One trailhead is located along the route, while the second is found at the end of the road. Drivers should be prepared to share the area with other recreational users and use extra caution near both trailheads, particularly during busy summer and fall weekends.
Difficulty
Although most of this route is fairly straightforward in dry conditions, there are some smaller ruts and embedded rocks that become more frequent toward the end. The main challenges are two rock gardens containing numerous large embedded rocks, with some obstacles standing more than 12 inches above the trail surface. These sections require careful tire placement and controlled driving, and a spotter is highly recommended to help identify the best line through the larger obstacles. Taking extra care in these areas will help reduce the risk of undercarriage damage, tire punctures, or sidewall damage.
History
State Bridge is an excellent starting point for exploring the surrounding backcountry by 4WD, SxS, motorcycle, bicycle, or on foot. Numerous dirt roads and designated public routes extend into the surrounding mountains and ranch country, with nearby destinations including Radium, Yarmony, McCoy, Burns, and the Upper Colorado River corridor. The Colorado River Headwaters Scenic and Historic Byway also begins near State Bridge and provides access to numerous scenic and recreational side trips.
