Trail Overview

Sheep Mountain is an engaging out-and-back climb designed for intermediate offroaders seeking stunning high-alpine views without extreme technical obstacles. Branching off from the Lead King Basin loop near Marble, Colorado, this 2.2-mile trail ascends rapidly through dense evergreen forests, gaining nearly 1,700 feet of elevation. The route features tight, challenging switchbacks that demand precise steering, along with several off-camber sections that keep drivers alert. While not overly punishing in dry conditions, the continuous climb provides a steady test of traction and vehicle placement as it winds up toward the timberline. The trail reaches a peak elevation of 11,575 feet, rewarded by a spectacular 270-degree panorama of the surrounding peaks and valleys of the Elk Mountains. High-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs are highly recommended to navigate the deep ruts and loose rock scattered along the dirt and gravel surface. This route can become slick and virtually impassable when wet, making summer and early autumn the best seasons to attempt the run before winter snows close the high country. Stock SUVs with decent ground clearance can make the trip with careful line selection, making it a perfect, scenic side-trip to pair with a larger exploration of the Gunnison National Forest area.

Downed logs cut ( jeep clearance was fine) and it was open to the top. Which was amazing. Incredible views!
