Trail Overview
Red & White Mountain is an exceptional high-country route for intermediate offroaders looking for a scenic drive with moderate challenges like steep climbs, mud, and rocky sections. Spanning approximately 16 miles with a peak elevation of 10,614 feet, this four-wheel-drive trail winds along a high ridge south of Red and White Mountain, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys before descending sharply into June Creek Canyon toward Avon. High-clearance four-wheel-drive SUVs, side-by-sides (SxSs), and OHVs will find the technical rating of 5 perfectly suited to their capabilities when the terrain is dry.
The trail typically opens in June and remains accessible through mid-November, depending on snowpack and seasonal weather conditions. Key obstacles include steep, narrow descents down F.S. 717, where drivers must navigate loose rocks and muddy patches. For those wishing to extend their journey or avoid the steep descent, options exist to head over Muddy Pass or loop back to the starting point near the Red Sandstone Road trailhead. Due to the trail's popularity, parking at the staging area fills up quickly.

Access Description
The trail's opening and closing dates are dependent on seasonal weather conditions, typically operating from June through mid-November. The trailhead parking lot fills up quickly, so early arrival is recommended. High-clearance stock SUVs can successfully navigate the trail when dry, but wet conditions can significantly increase difficulty due to mud.
