Trail Overview
Muddy Pass & Piney Guard Station is an exceptional scenic drive for beginner offroaders, families, and seasoned explorers looking for an accessible route with stunning alpine vistas and abundant dispersed camping opportunities near Vail and Wolcott. Stretching approximately 30 miles across the spectacular White River National Forest, this point-to-point trail ranges in elevation from 7,193 feet to a high of 10,647 feet, climbing over 3,000 feet through dense aspen groves, evergreen forests, and open meadows. Typically open from June 21 through November 22, the trail consists primarily of unpaved dirt and gravel surfaces, making it highly suitable for stock high-clearance vehicles, SUVs, and SxSs during dry conditions. The western section begins off Highway 131 north of Wolcott and winds northeastward, providing an easy-going technical rating of 2 out of 10 that remains highly approachable for most drivers.
As the route progresses eastward toward Vail, it intersects with the Red & White Mountain Trail and eventually leads toward the historic Piney Guard Station. The easternmost 6.5 miles experience heavy vehicle and foot traffic due to visitors heading to Piney Lake and its surrounding hiking trails, so drivers should expect congestion and limited pullouts. While the majority of the drive is straightforward, the spur to the Piney Guard Station features narrow, rutted sections where passing oncoming traffic can be challenging, and wet weather or early snow can quickly turn these dirt sections slick, necessitating high-clearance four-wheel-drive. Dispersed campsites are scattered generously along the path, offering breathtaking views of the Gore Range and making this route an ideal multi-day basecamp for hiking, photography, and exploring the surrounding wilderness.
