Trail Overview

This is an easy, scenic drive open June 21 through November 22. There are plenty of dispersed camping sites, all of them with amazing views. The first 6.5 miles are highly trafficked because of Piney Lake, and the amount of hikes available. You will reach Red & White Mountain Trail, and then the entrance for Muddy Pass. There is a connection to both trails about halfway through. The trail to the Piney Guard station is a little bit more rutted in areas, and you might need 4x4 during rain or snow.

Difficulty

It is mostly a scenic drive with dispersed camping. The trail to the guard station is a little more intermediate, especially with rain or snow. It is also one way in and out with a few places to give room to pass.

Easy trail and I bet it’s a beautiful drive with all of the Aspens right now but we couldn’t make it to the trail until friday night - late. Needless to say, we drove for hours and didn’t find a single campsite that was available. Everybody and their mom was camping on this trail and it probably killed us to arrive so late. Ended up turning around and sleeping in vail for the night. Recommend if you can arrive early, if not, I also recommend Tigiwon Road which is about 15 minutes away.

Fun drive through the mountains. Went on a weekday and only saw a couple of other cars. There was a brief road blockage due to logging, but only about 15m.

grading and watering operations within a few miles of the end of the Wolcott side of the trail. Good amount of standing water but very little mud otherwise.
