Trail Overview
Hamilton Creek is a short out-and-back forest route branching off Gaston Road. The route travels through a dense pine forest with narrow corridors, young timber growth, and thick brush that creates a secluded backcountry feel. While there are no major obstacles or technical challenges, the trail offers a more enclosed experience than many of the wider county gravel roads in the area. The entrance begins as a maintained gravel road before narrowing into a two-track path with vegetation encroaching from both sides. As the route progresses, pine trees and brush crowd the trail, making pinstriping likely for wider vehicles. Drivers should expect occasional shallow puddles after rain and limited opportunities to pass another vehicle in the tighter sections.
The route ultimately ends where multiple downed trees completely block further travel. These fallen trees create a natural turnaround point, requiring visitors to retrace their path back to Gaston Road. Although the trail is easy from a driving perspective, it provides a peaceful drive through an active forest environment with opportunities to observe wildlife and the ongoing regeneration of the surrounding pine stands. Visitors looking for a quiet exploration route rather than a technical off-road challenge will enjoy the scenery and isolation found along Hamilton Creek.

The primary challenge is the narrow trail width and vegetation encroachment rather than terrain difficulty. Most stock SUVs and trucks can complete the route with ease, though wider vehicles should expect brush contact and possible paint scratches. The route ends at a blockage of fallen trees and does not provide through travel.
History
The Ouachita National Forest was established in 1907 and is recognized as the oldest national forest in the southern United States. Many roads found throughout the forest today originated as logging, timber management, fire access, or resource extraction routes before becoming part of the modern Forest Service road network. Forest management remains an important part of the landscape, and travelers may encounter evidence of prescribed burns, timber thinning, and habitat restoration efforts. The Ouachita Mountains themselves are among the oldest mountain ranges in North America and are notable for their unique east-west orientation.
