Trail Overview
BLM SS1045 has become an out-and-back rugged rock-garden trail that begins with approximately 0.50 mile of really rocky, washed-out, slightly off-camber terrain due to heavy washouts. The trail briefly smooths out before becoming increasingly overgrown as it crosses the creek and continues around the base of the mountain. The route remains a rocky gravel 2-track with multiple wash and creek crossings. Larger trees, prickly pear, ocotillo, and yucca surround the trail, creating a beautiful desert landscape. The trail follows the base of the mountains and offers scenic views throughout. After passing through a safari-like livestock tank, the trail widens and climbs toward the other side of the mountain. When you reach the intersection, a U-turn will be required to locate the wash-crossing section on the trail to continue across the creek. After crossing the creek, you begin to climb a steep-grade, rocky hill; the trail opens into a beautiful cactus garden and appears at first to climb an even steeper grade. Near the base of the next mountain, the trail becomes extremely tight and overgrown with several cactus varieties. A steep climb rises directly up the hillside, which has been heavily overtaken by cactus. This section is no longer an easy or safe passage to the other side and should be approached with extreme caution or considered a turnaround point depending on vehicle width and conditions. Future monsoons will continue to change this hill. The surrounding ocotillo, prickly pear, and yucca make several areas along the trail excellent spots for a lunch break and enjoying the desert scenery.
