Trail Overview
From the North-South Transition Road, this well-maintained and relatively wide trail heads southwest toward the mangroves east of La Florida, offering one of the most reliable connections between La Florida and the highway to Ciudad Insurgentes. Unique among the routes in the area, it may show signs of light fishing traffic. The road begins with a straight, easy stretch through sparse desert vegetation, dipping in and out of dry lake beds--many of which make excellent, flat camp spots. However, avoid the lake bed used by local fishermen to dump clamshells, as the odor can be unpleasant; cleaner options are nearby. Midway through the route, you'll pass a small roadside memorial before the trail begins a steady descent toward the mangroves. As you near sea level, the road bends left and winds briefly through mangrove edges before reentering the desert, where it forks into multiple paths leading deeper into the La Florida area and the surrounding coastal terrain.
Difficulty
Any vehicle with reasonable ground clearance--including 2WD--is suitable for this route, as it's one of the widest and best-maintained roads in and out of the area. However, once you reach the mangroves, tide awareness is essential. High tides can flood some of the lower sections, posing a risk of getting stuck regardless of whether you're in a 2WD or 4WD vehicle. Plan accordingly and check tide charts before venturing through the coastal zones.
