The Highland Forest Trail begins and ends at the Skyline Lodge parking area, located within Highland Forest County Park in central New York. From the trailhead, follow signs for the Main Trail as it winds through a mix of hardwood forest and gentle meadows. The route follows a rolling path along forested ridges and dips into shallow valleys, with occasional interpretive signs describing local flora and fauna. Stay right at the first major junction to remain on the Main Trail; additional marked intersections offer optional spurs or shorter routes back to the lodge.
This moderate route is well-suited for day hikes in Central New York, offering quiet scenery, wildlife viewing opportunities, and a well-maintained tread suitable for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in winter. While seasonal streams may offer water along the way, they are not reliable—carry what you need. The trail is open year-round, but hikers should be prepared for icy patches or snow in colder months, and check for ticks in summer. A mix of wooded solitude and scenic overlooks makes this a worthwhile outing in any season.
