Loop
The Stoney Pond Long Loop begins at the gravel parking area on Jones Road in Stoney Pond State Forest, northeast of Erieville. From the trailhead, the route traces a wide circuit around the perimeter of the forest, using a series of interconnected DEC trails that pass through rolling hardwood-conifer stands, quiet drainages, and open areas near the namesake pond. The loop can be hiked in either direction, with options to shorten the route using internal trail spurs. Several segments narrow to singletrack and may be wet or muddy during spring or after rain.
While trail markers are posted, signage is inconsistent—bring a DEC map or GPS device to stay oriented, especially at junctions and crossings near Jones Road. Primitive campsites are available near the north shore of Stoney Pond, and wildlife sightings are common throughout. In winter, some sections are groomed for skiing, making this a versatile route for year-round use.
This longer loop offers a rewarding hike through peaceful forest terrain with views of Stoney Pond, excellent fall foliage, and opportunities for both day hiking and overnight camping.
