Loop
Starting from the Chittenango Falls State Park parking area, this route follows a combination of the Meadow Trail, Chips Trail, and Gorge Trail to form a short, scenic loop around one of the most impressive waterfalls in Central New York. From the trailhead, head toward the picnic meadow and descend gradually along the Gorge Trail, which winds beneath a canopy of hardwoods and offers dramatic views of Chittenango Falls from below. A steep set of stairs leads down into the gorge—use caution, especially when conditions are wet or icy.
After crossing a pedestrian bridge near the base of the falls, the route climbs back up along the opposite side of the gorge. Continue on the Chips Trail, which transitions to the Meadow Trail near the top. The final stretch loops through an open, grassy area with wide views of the park's upper terrain before returning to the parking area. This route is popular for day hikes near Syracuse and provides excellent opportunities for photography, wildlife observation, and learning about the area’s unique ecology—including rare, protected species.
