This route begins at the Brookside Trailhead in Green Lakes State Park and travels through dense hardwood forest toward Round Lake. From the trailhead, head northeast on the Brookside Trail, following a narrow mostly flat path that parallels a small creek. The trail gradually curves around Round Lake’s southern shore, where limestone cliffs rise above turquoise water unique to this glacially formed, meromictic lake.
Continue north along the lake’s eastern edge, watching for interpretive signs that highlight the area’s geologic and ecological significance. The trail eventually reconnects with the park’s broader trail system, offering the option to extend your hike or head west to return to the Brookside Trailhead. Expect minimal elevation change throughout, though sections may be muddy or icy in spring and winter. Tick activity is common during warmer months, especially in grassy areas. This route offers easy access to some of the best day hikes in Central New York, with rare lakeside scenery and year-round appeal.
