There and Back
Beginning at the Old Job Trailhead near Forest Road 30, this moderate route follows the Old Job Trail south. The path climbs gradually on old logging grades through a shaded mix of hardwood and spruce forest.. After a steady but manageable ascent, the route joins the Long Trail/Appalachian Trail corridor and continues toward Griffith Lake.
At the end of the route the forest opens to Griffith Lake, a quiet backcountry destination surrounded by evergreens and low ridges. Water is available near the lake, though it must be treated before use. Fires are prohibited here, and all food must be stored in bear-resistant containers. The return follows the same route north to the trailhead. Clear forest scenery, solitude, and lakeside views make this a rewarding day hike or overnight trip in the Green Mountain National Forest.
