Description
Starting from the Lake Trail Trailhead on South End Road, this route climbs steadily through mixed hardwood forest to meet the Appalachian Trail/Long Trail near Griffith Lake. Continue past the junction to reach the lake’s wooded shoreline and designated camping area, a popular backpacking destination in Green Mountain National Forest. From here, you can continue south on the Long Trail to Peru Peak Shelter. Otherwise, turn north and follow the trail to Baker Peak. The final approach includes a steeper ascent over exposed rock, with the summit offering wide-ranging views across the southern Green Mountains. Return along the Baker Peak Trail to rejoin the Lake Trail. This route offers scenic variety and solitude, with classic Vermont terrain and seasonal highlights from spring wildflowers to peak fall foliage.
