The Emerald Lake Trail begins near the main campground and day-use area of Emerald Lake State Park, offering an easy-to-follow path around the shoreline through gently rolling terrain and mixed hardwood forest. Several spur trails lead to swimming areas, scenic viewpoints, and quiet coves, allowing flexibility in how far and where you go. At multiple points along the route, benches and access paths provide good spots to stop and enjoy views of the lake or watch for waterfowl such as loons and herons.
This easy to moderate trail is open for hiking during the park’s main season, with snowshoeing possible in winter months when the lake is frozen and facilities are closed. Dogs are allowed on leash in designated areas. While there are no major climbs, some short sections involve uneven footing or slight inclines. Drinking water is available at the campground, but any water collected from the lake should be filtered. Fall is a particularly scenic time to visit, as the surrounding Taconic Mountains light up with colorful foliage.
