There and Back
The Griffith Lake Trail begins at the trailhead on Staples Brook Rd and climbs gradually through a dense mixed forest typical of the Green Mountain National Forest. The trail surface is uneven in places, with roots and rocks requiring attentive footwork, especially after rain. A short distance in, hikers enter a series of wetland sections crossed by well-maintained boardwalks. These elevated paths keep feet dry while offering glimpses of lush, wetland vegetation and occasional wildlife.
Several seasonal stream crossings may offer water, but all sources should be treated. The trail ends at the edge of Griffith Lake, a small, serene body of water nestled just below the alpine zone. Designated campsites near the lake provide an option for overnight trips. This route is also close to a major intersection with the Long Trail and Appalachian Trail, offering potential connections for extended hikes. The lake’s stillness and forested shoreline make it a rewarding turnaround point for a moderate day hike or a scenic overnight.
