Description
This out-and-back along the Long Trail begins at the Mad Tom Notch Trailhead and climbs steadily to the summit of Bromley Mountain. From the trailhead, follow the Long Trail south as it ascends through dense forest dominated by spruce, fir, and sugar maple. After a steady climb along the ridge, the route passes intermittent streambeds near Mad Tom Brook, which may offer water early in the season. Follow the Long Trail's white blazes to reach Mad Tom Shelter, located on the ridgeline below the summit. The final approach opens into alpine-style terrain across ski slopes operated by Bromley Mountain Resort. From the summit, hikers are rewarded with expansive views of the Green Mountains and beyond. Cold wind and sudden weather shifts are common above tree line, even in fall. This route is a rewarding short hike or part of a longer thru-hike along Vermont’s historic Long Trail.
