There and Back
This route begins at the Route 11/30 trailhead just east of Manchester Center, where the Long Trail and Appalachian Trail run concurrently. From the trailhead, the path enters a mixed hardwood forest and begins a steady climb along the western slope of Bromley Mountain. Early sections of the trail include roots, rocks, and several stream crossings that may dry up in late summer. At intersections, follow the white blazes to stay on the Long Trail.
The route gradually gains elevation as it ascends the Green Mountain ridgeline, offering filtered views through the trees. About halfway up, hikers pass the Bromley Shelter spur, a worthwhile stop for water when the nearby spring is running. The final stretch climbs more steeply before emerging onto Bromley’s open ski slopes. The trail follows the lift line to the summit, where expansive views extend across southern Vermont and into New York and New Hampshire. The return follows the same route back to the trailhead.
This is one of the best day hikes near Manchester for summit views, fall colors, and a classic stretch of the Long Trail.
