There and Back
This moderate hiking route begins at the Long Trail/Appalachian Trail parking area off Route 11/30 near Manchester, Vermont. From the trailhead, the route follows the Long Trail south through mixed hardwood forest, gradually gaining elevation as it climbs the southern Green Mountains. After a steady ascent, the trail passes a few seasonal streams and potential muddy sections, especially in spring and early summer.
Continuing to the summit, the trail reaches a rocky outcrop near Spruce Peak that offers a partial but scenic overlook of the surrounding forested ridges. Hikers can continue a short ways to a spur to the Spruce Peak Shelter, a designated overnight camping area with a nearby reliable water source. Return to the parking area along the same route. This trail is popular for day hikes in the Green Mountain National Forest and can also be accessed in winter with snowshoes or backcountry skis, though icy conditions may persist into early spring.
