Loop
The Rich Woods Loop begins and ends near the parking area in Emerald Lake State Park. From the trailhead, the route heads north through mixed hardwood forest before turning east and climbing gradually to the ridgeline. After reaching the high point, where filtered views of the Dorset Mountain ridgeline open through the trees, the trail descends gently to complete the circuit. Several unmarked junctions appear along the route, but the main trail remains generally well-defined.
This moderate route features uneven footing, seasonal stream crossings, and sections of moderate elevation gain. Fall is especially scenic, with colorful foliage and quiet understory. Moose and black bear sightings are occasionally reported, so hikers should stay alert and follow food storage guidelines. Water sources are unreliable later in the season, and ticks are common in late spring and summer. The route is typically accessible from late May through October, though road access may be limited during mud season.
