There and Back
The Dorset Peak Trail begins at the end of Tower Road, just east of the town of Dorset, Vermont. From the parking area, follow the unmaintained jeep road as it climbs steadily through dense hardwood forest. The route initially ascends at a moderate grade before steepening, with several loose gravel sections requiring careful footing. About halfway up, hikers pass the moss-covered remains of an abandoned marble quarry, a unique relic of the area's industrial history. The trail continues on a steep ascent, passing a loop spur to the South Peak before reaching the North Peak.
This rugged route is best tackled in dry conditions between late spring and fall, as both the access road and trail can become impassable during mud season or snow. Seasonal streams may be present in the lower elevations, but they are unreliable in late summer—plan to carry all necessary water. While the climb is strenuous in sections, this remote hike offers solitude, local history, and the satisfaction of summiting one of southern Vermont’s highest peaks.
