There and Back
Beginning at the Danby Road Trailhead, the route follows the Long Trail south through mixed hardwood and spruce-fir forest typical of the southern Green Mountains. The path climbs steadily from the trailhead, passing moss-covered boulders and crossing several small brooks that often hold water late into summer. After a gradual rise, hikers reach the Big Branch Shelter, where a reliable stream offers a good spot to refill water and take a break before the final push to the summit.
Beyond Big Branch, the terrain grows steeper and rockier as the trail ascends the ridgeline toward Baker Peak. The upper section includes short, rugged scrambles typical of Class 2 mountain trails, with occasional glimpses through the trees hinting at the views to come. Near the top, the forest thins, and open ledges provide expansive views across the Green Mountain National Forest, including Mount Tabor and the Taconic Range to the west.
This section of the Long Trail rewards hikers with a true backcountry feel—quiet woods, abundant wildlife, and a classic Vermont summit panorama from Baker Peak’s open ledge.
