This route begins at the Little Rock Pond Trailhead near Danby, Vermont, and forms a loop using the Green Mountain Trail and a section of the Long Trail. Start by climbing steadily through mixed hardwood forest on the Green Mountain Trail. The ascent is sustained and rocky in sections, eventually gaining a wooded ridgeline that offers limited but rewarding views near the summit of Green Mountain. From here, the trail descends steeply over uneven terrain before reaching a signed junction near Little Rock Pond.
At the junction, head south to trace the shoreline of Little Rock Pond, a peaceful spot known for its backcountry campsites and frequent loon calls. The trail continues along the pond’s edge before connecting with the Appalachian/Long Trail to close the loop. Water is typically available at the pond and from intermittent streams, but all sources should be treated. Expect changing trail conditions depending on season—snow may linger on higher ridges into early summer, and fall foliage peaks in October. This route rewards hikers with a mix of challenging terrain, quiet forest, and classic Green Mountain scenery.
