The Bald Mountain Trail begins off Notch Rd in Aitken State Forest, just outside Rutland, Vermont. From the trailhead, the route climbs gradually through a mixed hardwood and conifer forest typical of the Green Mountains. Early sections follow an old woods road before narrowing to singletrack as the elevation increases. After a short distance, the trail steepens noticeably; expect some sustained uphill travel through switchbacks and occasional rocky footing. Wildlife sightings are possible along the way, including white-tailed deer and barred owls, especially in quieter seasons.
There are no major junctions on this straightforward route to the summit. The trail tops out at Bald Mountain, where an open ledge provides expansive views of Green Mountain ridgelines—particularly scenic during peak fall foliage. Hikers should be prepared for slippery conditions after rain and expect black flies in late spring. There are no reliable water sources, so bring adequate supplies. This trail is best hiked from late spring through fall, though it remains accessible in winter for snowshoeing.
