There and Back
The Bucklin Trail begins from Wheelerville Road near Mendon, and climbs steadily through a classic Green Mountain National Forest landscape. The route starts with a moderate grade beneath a canopy of mixed hardwoods, crossing a few small streams that may run dry in late summer. After a short distance, mossy glades and soft footing give way to steeper terrain as the trail approaches the flanks of Killington Mountain. Around halfway, hikers reach a junction with the Long Trail and Appalachian Trail; stay straight to continue toward the summit.
The final push is steep and strenuous, with sections of rock scrambling that require the use of hands. The trail enters a higher elevation alpine zone with limited tree cover and quickly shifting weather. From the summit of Killington Peak, hikers are rewarded with sweeping views across the Green Mountains, Adirondacks, and White Mountains. This is a demanding but rewarding day hike for those prepared for rugged terrain and variable conditions.
